Foxtel locks down more Wentworth

FremantleMedia Australia’s prison drama Wentworth

Australian pay TV platform Foxtel has ordered a seventh season of female prison drama Wentworth.

The renewal comes despite the fact the FremantleMedia Australia production no longer qualifies for the 20% producer offset, having exceeded the 65-episode cap.

The popularity of the series internationally and the sale last month of the Australian free-to-air and streaming rights to pubcaster the ABC probably make the show more viable for Foxtel. A Foxtel rep declined to comment.

The ABC will begin airing the first season of Wentworth tonight. The show has been sold to 141 territories, including the UK (Channel Five), the US (Netflix), Sweden (TV4), Scandinavia (CMore) and Africa (Mnet).

Season six, which introduces new characters played by Leah Purcell, Susie Porter and Rarriwuy Hick, will premiere on Foxtel’s showcase and stream live on Foxtel Now on June 19 at 20.30.
