Fox renews The Following, New Girl

US network Fox has renewed psychological thriller The Following and a trio of comedies for further seasons.

The Following, which stars Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon as an FBI agent brought back into the field to catch a serial killer, has been picked up for a third season.

Meanwhile, early season renewals have been handed to comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl and The Mindy Project. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is picked up for a second season, Mindy for a third and New Girl for a fourth.

They join three other Fox scripted series which have already been picked up for next season: Glee, Sleepy Hollow and Bones.

Fox has extra holes to fill in its schedule after axing its version of singing competition The X Factor earlier this year.

The network recently announced it is to end the traditional pilot system of developing shows and move towards a model more akin to cable.
