FMI backs Luminaries, shops Coronation

MIPTV: FremantleMedia International (FMI) has teamed up with UK prodco Working Title Television and Swiss film financier Silver Reel TV on a historical drama adaptation for BBC2.

The Luminaries (6×60’) is adapted from the Man Booker Prize-winning novel by Eleanor Catton, who will also exec produce along with Andrew Woodhead, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title Television; Mona Qureshi for the BBC; Christian Vesper for FremantleMedia; and Claudia Bluemhuber for Silver Reel.

The deal gives FMI global distribution rights, which it will handle internationally in association with Silver Reel.

The drama centres on two young lovers who travel from London to New Zealand’s South Island to find their fortune during the 1860s gold rush.

In other news, FMI has sold royal doc The Coronation to 70-plus buyers across Europe, Latin America, Canada, the Middle East and Asia, among them CBC and Tele-Quebec in Canada; Nat Geo in Latin America; France Télévisions; DR in Denmark; NRK in Norway; Telefonica in Spain; Sky Italia; NHK in Japan; Channel 1 in Russia; NTV in Turkey; and TVB in Hong Kong.

The 1×60’ film from Atlantic Productions marks the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation and shares her memories of the occasion and the history of the Crown Jewels.

It was exec produced by Anthony Geffen for Atlantic Pictures, produced and directed Harvey Lilley and commissioned by Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, and Tom McDonald, head of commissioning, natural history and specialist factual.

Coproduction partners included Smithsonian Channel and ABC Television, with FMI distributing globally.
