Fine Point, Fadoo launch $398k fund

HOT DOCS: Toronto’s Fadoo Productions is uniting with Northern Ireland-based indie Fine Point Films to launch a fund that will back non-fiction films and series.

The Silver Fund will aim to invest up to C$500,000 (US$398,000) in documentaries over the next two years, with up to C$50,000 being made available for each supported project.

The two companies, which recently partnered for a feature documentary about soccer legend George Best, have secured financial support for the joint venture from Northern Ireland Screen and Canadian firm Green Arrow Productions.

Launching the initiative this week during the Hot Docs festival in Toronto, the partners said the fund will be looking to back “high-end” feature docs and “ambitious” episodic series that are at an advanced stage of development, but are not yet fully financed.

“The fund will be most receptive to projects that can secure cornerstone finance from major North American broadcasters, streaming services and private equity sources,” the partners said.

Fadoo president Corey Russell added: “Every filmmaker knows that accessing start-up capital to get a great idea off the ground is a huge challenge. This fund gives Fadoo and Fine Point Films, and the other companies we hope to work with, a massive headstart in developing our documentaries.”

Fine Point is also present at Hot Docs this year via its film Bobby Sands: 66 Days, directed by Brendan Byrne, which will have its world premiere on May 3. The film looks at the titular member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, who in 1981 died while on hunger strike in prison.
