Facebook eyes TV with app

Facebook is reportedly preparing to ramp up its TV efforts with plans for a new app and original content.

The app, which is said to have been in development for the past nine months, would be available via streaming devices such as Apple TV and would offer an array of video content, as opposed to simply replicating news feeds.

The US social media giant is already talking to producers about developing programming for the service, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The paper said Facebook was also looking to license longer-form TV shows, including scripted content, as well as sports and entertainment programming.

The company has already made moves to become an eSports destination to appeal to millennials and younger users, recently linking with eSports firm Blizzard to stream its Heroes of the Dorm 2017 show via Facebook Live.

The social network has also worked with US Hispanic network Telemundo on a live show on Facebook, based on its tech strand El Pulso.

Other social media services have already made their moves into video, with Twitter’s live shows and the Discover portal on Snapchat. The latter, however, shuttered its originals channels in 2015 after a short foray in the space.
