Esquire preps Netflix-style release

Esquire Network in the US is to debut an entire series online prior to its network premiere, mimicking the distribution model of subscription VoD sites such as Netflix.

All 10-episodes of documentary The Short Game, which follows eight of the best seven-and-eight year old golfers in the US, will be available on demand next Monday.

The series is produced by LA-based Goodbye Pictures and will begin airing on the NBCUniversal-owned channel on January 20 next year.

It explores how the prodigal golfers balance their school and family life with the high-pressure tournaments they compete in.

The doc also takes an in-depth look at each of the golfers and their families to learn about the emotional and financial commitments they make, and explores whether the kids or their parents have the most at stake.

It will mark the first time any network in the US has premiered an entire series on demand.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the BBC is set to premiere Car Share, a new series from stand-up comedian Peter Kay, in its entirety on its iPlayer VoD service before airing it on linear channels.
