Endemol Shine sparks Gunpowder deals

Broadcasters in Australia, Africa and Europe have picked up the BBC’s three-part 17th century thriller about the Gunpowder Plot against King James I.

Gunpowder was developed by Game of Thrones star Kit Harington alongside Ronan Bennett and Daniel West, and produced by Endemol Shine Group-owned Kudos in association with Thriker Films. It debuted on BBC1 last year.

BBC Worldwide has picked up the show in Australia, Africa, South Africa, the Middle East and Benelux, while DBS Satellite in Israel, New Zealand’s LightBox and Germany’s RTL have also acquired the series.

Discovery has taken Italian-speaking rights in Europe, while Japan’s Tohokushinsha Film Corporation has also bought the show.

The 3×60′ miniseries explores the attempt to blow up parliament more than 400 years ago, an event still marked in the UK on November 5 with bonfires and fireworks. It iss sold by Endemol Shine International.

Gunpowder has previously sold to HBO in North America, where it drew an average of nearly two million viewers for each episode. HBO Europe has also taken rights to the series for its services in the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe and Spain.
