Endemol Shine UK has acquired a controlling stake in animation production outfit Simon’s Cat.

The London-based company was founded in 2008 by illustrator, animator and director Simon Tofield and is behind the digital comedy series of the same name, which claims 650 million views and 3.5 million subscribers on YouTube.

The series of shorts, which follows the mischievous antics of a fat white cat and his owner, will now be available on Endemol’s online channel and distribution network, Endemol Beyond.

The two companies will also aim to expand the property’s presence in publishing, licensing and merchandising, as well as on linear television.

International broadcasters to have acquired the series from previous distributor eOne include France Télévisions, which hosts the animations on its children’s VoD service Ludo.

Tofield recently crowdfunded to the first ever Simon’s Cat colour film, a 13-minute animation titled Off to the Vet.

Endemol Shine UK’s other animation activities include Mr Bean: The Animated Series, which is produced by its London-based production outfit Tiger Aspect Productions.

“Simon’s Cat is a brilliant example of how an original brand created on YouTube can reach and delight huge audiences,” said Laurence Jones, commercial director at Endemol Shine UK.
