Endemol seals Amber pact

Endemol has entered into an exclusive first-look development and distribution deal with UK production outfit Amber Television.

The three-year deal will see Endemol provide development funding and deficit financing in return for exclusive first-look distribution rights on Amber’s output.

The firms will jointly develop and finance a new slate of scripted programmes for the UK, US and international markets, which will be distributed through Endemol Worldwide Distribution.

Industry veterans Ileen Maisel and Lawrence Elman joined forces in 2009 as directors of Amber to focus on the acquisition of intellectual property rights of literary works and the production of feature films, documentaries, TV series and content for digital platforms.

The company has also entered partnerships with publishing houses, including Penguin.

Its recent projects include a feature film version of Romeo and Juliet, adapted by Downton Abbey scribe Julian Fellows, and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism, a film based on the best-selling books by Georgia Byng.

Forthcoming productions include Stratton: First into Action, London’s Falling and The Perfect Assassin.

In September, Endemol signed a similar three-year first-look deal with fledgling London indie Feel Films. The deal sees the companies working on scripted projects together, with Feel currently developing a seven-part adaptation of the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell novel for the BBC.
