Electus re-opens musical kitchen

MIPCOM: US production outfit Electus is partnering with Queen Latifa’s Flavor Unit Entertainment prodco to bring a Singaporean musical format to the US.

Electus, Flavor Unit and Principato-Young Entertainment are pitching a local version of The Kitchen Musical following a deal with the format’s distributor Small World IFT.

Electus and Small World originally did a deal for the US rights to the show in 2011 but that agreement lapsed with no broadcaster attached to the project. Now the firm will try again with Flavor Unit and Principato-Young also on board.

The Kitchen Musical, which has a similar style to Fox’s hit teen drama Glee, tells the story of a young woman who becomes the sous chef of he father’s famous restaurant.

The acquisition broadens Electus’s reputation as an adapter of foreign formats for the US – it recently landed No Tomorrow, an adaptation of Brazilian show Como Aproveitar o Fim do Mundo, with The CW.

World’s End, based on Icelandic dramedy Heimsendir, is currently in production at TBS while Killer Women, from Argentinean crime format Mujeres Asesinas, aired on ABC.

John Pollak, president of Electus International, initiated and negotiated the deal for the US format rights with Tim Crescenti, president of Small World IFT.

It follows Small World’s recent deal to bring Israeli series Better Late Than Never to NBC in the US.
