Early involvement ‘key to All3 pipeline’

MIPTV: The CEO of distributor All3Media International believes early involvement in the development of shows and linking with non-traditional commissioning partners are key to ensuring a strong content pipeline.

Speaking during a discussion on distributors’ increasing involvement in the production process here at MipTV in Cannes, Louise Pedersen also said changes in the industry meant distributors had to finance treatment scripts, and that UK-based All3 was experimenting by looking for its own original commissions.

“That move towards developing shows with producers and also working with them to find non-traditional broadcast partners outside of the UK public service broadcasters has been a big focus for us over the past year, driven by a competitive landscape,” Pedersen explained.

One example she offered was All3’s psychological thriller The Feed, which Amazon is coproducing in the US with Studio Lambert for US cable giant Liberty Global.

The Feed is based on a recently published novel by Nick Clark Windo and will launch as an Amazon Prime Original in the US, Canada and Latin America as well as on Liberty Global’s international cable platforms, including Virgin Media in the UK.

Pedersen said such projects see all parties learning to collaborate in new ways. “It brings its own set of complications in the sense that Virgin haven’t commissioned shows before, we haven’t and suddenly you’re into a whole new world of commissioning, talent agreements and clearances that we haven’t dealt with before.

“It takes you into a different space editorially but it is a new route to market and a new buyer. That model of trying to think a bit more creatively with the producer about who is the commissioning partner is something we’re working really hard on and is starting to pay off.”
