DR, Arte partner Borgen creator

Danish pubcaster DR and Arte in France are coproducing the next series from Borgen creator Adam Price, a contemporary drama about faith and spirituality.

Rides Upon the Storm (working title) will be produced by DR with Arte and the French and Danish arms of Sam Productions, the TV prodco set up by Studio Canal alongside Price and two other writers in Scandinavia last year.

Produced by Camilla Hammerich (Borgen), two seasons totalling 20×60′ episodes are to start shooting in spring next year, with the premiere expected in 2017. StudioCanal will handle worldwide distribution.

Faith will serve as the backdrop to the drama – which follows two brothers in conflict with each other – in the same way that politics did in Borgen, according to the producers.

Borgen was a major hit on both DR and Arte, and was also sold to more than 80 different countries.

“I have always been fascinated by the concept of faith as a catalyst for humans’ actions,” said Price. “In the last 10 to 15 years, we have seen an intensification of the situation between the great world religions, which affects international politics and everyone’s daily life.”

Piv Bernth, DR’s head of drama, added: “We want the audience to reflect and discuss the issues with each other, and we believe there is a good opportunity for this to happen when faith is the theme and key point in this new drama series.”
