Downie was named chief creative officer in 2013 following the exit of Maverick’s joint chief executive Alex Fraser, who went on to co-found 7Wonder, an indie backed by Australian broadcaster Seven Network.

Downie’s recent credits include ITV’s Dinosaur Britain, BBC1’s The Truth About Sugar and BBC2’s Old School. He first joined Maverick in 2006 following a stint as a Channel 4 commissioner.

In a statement, Downie said: “After almost a decade, it feels like the right time to make a change. I depart wishing the hugely talented Maverick team every success, knowing they’ll continue to make inspiring programmes with great passion.”

Last year, Jim Sayer stepped down after a decade as CEO of Maverick, with the role now held by Simon Knight.

The news is the latest in a string of leadership changes at All3Media-owned indies under CEO Jane Turton. Michelle Buck came in last year to take over at Company Pictures while Tina Flintoff and Nick Hornby have replaced Sue Murphy at Optomen.

“I’d like to thank Mark for all of his tremendous hard work at Maverick over the last 10 years, especially in managing the recent period of transition within the company,” said Turton.

“I wish him every success for the future and hope he enjoys a well-earned break over the Summer. Simon Knight and the Maverick team will continue their brilliant work and have some great new projects on the horizon.”
