Disney creates Spanish net with Movistar+

Movistar+ Disney will carry the Mouse House’s hit movie Frozen

The Walt Disney Company is set to launch a film channel in Spain with Telefonica-owned local pay TV operator Movistar+.

Movistar+ Disney will launch as both a linear channel and on-demand service on December 22 and builds on an existing partnership between the two companies.

The channel will feature content from Walt Disney Studios and Pixar, including movies such as Frozen, Beauty & the Beast, The Lion King, Fantasia, Maleficent and various short films from the Disney catalogue.

The move comes after Disney struck a deal with UK pay TV firm Sky to set up a similar channel, called Sky Movies Disney, in 2013.

“This is the first time in our market that a single platform, in both a linear and non-linear environment, has presented so much Disney content,” said Simon Amselem, CEO of The Walt Disney Company in Spain and Portugal.

“Movistar+ will be one of the few operators around the world that can place the Disney seal on one of its own channels.”
