Jay Trinidad has been tasked with scaling up the factual giant’s activities in Japan and South Korea, expanding beyond pay TV platforms to target millennials in the region.

Trinidad’s career has been digital-focused, with a 10-year stint at Google culminating in his appointment as head of consumer marketing and operations for Asia. He was most recently with fast-food giant McDonald’s as VP of digital in Japan.

He will now be based in Tokyo and will report to Arthur Bastings, president and MD of Discovery Networks Asia Pacific.

Louis Boswell, who previously handled Discovery’s Japan business, has switched to head up the company’s Southeast Asia operations.

Hee-Man Lee, country manager for Korea, and his team will be folded into Trinidad’s group.

Elsewhere, Discovery-owned networks in the US and UK have joined up to commission a series about the feats of engineering used by the busiest shipping crews on the Atlantic.

Mega Shippers (8×60′) has been ordered by Discovery Communications-owned Science Channel in the US and Quest in the UK, which is operated by Discovery Networks Northern Europe.

UK indie Back2Back produced the series, which will begin rolling out on Discovery’s channels worldwide this summer across Northern Europe, Southern Europe, CEEMEA, the US and Asia Pacific.

It gives audiences exclusive behind-the-scenes access to ports and crews on both sides of the Atlantic, where mega-machines ensure cargo gets delivered on time and in perfect condition, whatever the weather.
