Discovery recharges BattleBots

BattleBots first aired on Comedy Central

Discovery Communications in the US has greenlit a new season of robot fighting series BattleBots.

New episodes of the series, to which Discovery’s cable channel Science Channel took off-net rights from US network ABC last year, will air on the Science and Discovery channels this spring.

BattleBots features homemade robots battling against each other in a knockout tournament and reveals the stories behind those who create the machines.

It is produced by Whalerock Industries and BattleBot Productions and exec produced by original creators Edward P Roski and Greg Munson alongside Lloyd Braun, Chris Cowan, Tom Gutteridge and Aaron Catling. Additionally, Wyatt Channell will exec produce for Discovery Channel and Science Channel.

The series originally aired on Comedy Central for five seasons until 2002, before being revived by ABC in 2015. It ran for a seventh season in 2016, before Discovery made its latest revival of the franchise.

Marc Etkind, general manager of Science Channel, said fans “clamouring for more action” convinced Discovery to bring back the series.
