Discovery pulls Everest jump

Discovery Channel has cancelled its planned live event show in which wing suit jumper Joby Ogwyn was to have jumped from Mount Everest after an avalanche on the mountain killed 13 people.

Everest Jump Live had been scheduled to air on May 11, produced by Peacock Productions, which was also working on a series of Live From Basecamp shows that would have aired in the five days leading up to the jump.

However, Discovery said it would not be going ahead with the show following the avalanche that claimed the lives of 13 Sherpa guides on Friday. A further nine guides were rescued and the Nepalese government is now considering cancelling all climbs for the rest of the year.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Sherpa community,” said a statement from Discovery Channel.

Previously, Nik Wallenda’s live tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon drew big audiences to the channel and he is due to stage another highwire stunt over the skyline of Chicago later in the year.
