Discovery names Sweden CEO

Discovery Networks has appointed a former HBO and Canal+ exec to oversee its operations in Sweden.

Henriette Zeuchner

Henriette Zeuchner has been named CEO of Discovery Networks Sweden and will work on networks including Channel 5, Eurosport, Discovery Channel and TLC.

She will oversee Discovery’s programming investments including local productions and the Olympic Games, after rights were secured by the parent company in 2015 for US$1.45bn. She takes up the job on September 1.

Discovery and Eurosport also recently secured exclusive rights to Swedish football leagues Allsvenskan and Superettan from 2020 to 2025, with matches due to be shown on Channel 5, Eurosport and Eurosport Player.

Zeuchner, who was most recently CEO at Stockholm-based media outfit Berling Media, will also be part of the leadership team for Discovery’s Nordic regional management division.

Mike Lang, Discovery’s president of international development, digital and discovery for the Nordics, said Zeuchner’s “extensive experience” in media and telecoms would “bring a strategic mindset that will be invaluable.”

Lang was promoted to his position in November, six months after Discovery Networks Sweden CEO Jonas Sjogren resigned from his post following more than a decade in the role. Harald Strømme, then head of TVNorge and Discovery Networks Norway, took up Sjogren’s remit but left last month.

Zeuchner said: “The fact that the TV industry is going through an incredible transformation is a reason why I chose this challenge and I hope to use some of my past experiences in my new role.

“Discovery has consistently shown a willingness to invest in the content, including locally produced entertainment and sports. The company is also willing to innovate and take risks, and I know there are many talented people in the Nordic team as well as the Discovery and Eurosport digital organisation. Therefore, I am convinced we have the muscle and the right conditions to succeed in the future.”

Discovery Networks Sweden claims a weekly reach of just over four million viewers and operates Channel 5, Channel 9, Channel 11, Discovery Channel, Eurosport 1, Eurosport 2 and TLC in the country.

It is also behind Animal Planet, Discovery Science, Investigation Discovery, Discovery World, Discovery HD Showcase and Animal Planet HD, as well as online platform Dplay.
