Discovery expands live Everest offering

Discovery Channel has commissioned a week of live programmes from Mount Everest to build up to its two-hour Everest Jump Live event in May.

Everest: Live from Base Camp will air for five nights on Discovery across 224 territories and be simulcast on US cablenets Science and Discovery en Español.

Weather permitting, the shows will begin at 23.00 (ET/PT) on Monday May 5, and be produced by NBC News’ Peacock Productions which is also making the live event featuring Joby Ogwyn.

Outside the US, Everest: Live from Base Camp will air across select markets including Latin America, India and the UK from May 5 at 23.00 (ET), 04.00 GMT.

Discovery announced in February that Ogwyn would climb to the summit of Everest and then jump off in a winged suit for the channel’s latest extreme live event. Previously, Nik Wallenda’s live tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon drew big audiences to the channel.

The live evening shows will go behind the scenes of the challenging and complicated broadcast and speak to Joby about his preparations and journey to the top of the mountain. Viewers will have the chance to join in and ask questions via social media.

The broadcasts will be hosted by Kyle Martino from NBC Sports and Chris Jacobs, who has previously fronted Velocity’s Overhaulin’.

Betsy Wagner, Howard Swartz, Gretchen Eisele, Colleen Halpin, Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are the executive producers.
