Discovery buys into Boat Rocker history series

Armour is recreated using traditional techniques in History In The Making

MIPTV: Discovery Communications in Europe has acquired the rights to a new factual series from Boat Rocker Rights, the distribution arm of Canada-based global entertainment firm Boat Rocker Media.

Season two of History In The Making (13×30’), made by Boat Rocker Studios-owned Crooked Horse Productions, has been picked up by Discovery Communications channels in the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, all of which will premiere the show later this year.

The show revisits history through modern-day craftsmen and artisans, who use traditional techniques to create items ranging from armour and weapons to books, barrels and baseballs. Season two will feature experts, artisans and handcrafted goods from across North America and Europe.

The latest deals with Discovery highlight Boat Rocker’s move into direct financing of original content for the global marketplace, according to the company.

Boat Rocker Media’s CEO John Young said the early success of History In The Making “validates our broader belief that there has never been a better time to create premium content.”

Young added that he expects “significant organic growth across all genres of content from internal as well as third-party creators.”

Boat Rocker Rights is currently in talks with more as-yet-undisclosed additional broadcasters for both seasons of the show (26×30’).

Boat Rocker has been increasing its activity in the unscripted arena, following the launch of Crooked Horse Productions, which replaced its factual and unscripted division Temple Street Productions last year.

Earlier this year, Boat Rocker Media acquired FremantleMedia’s Kids and Family Entertainment division.
