DHX partners DreamWorks for originals

DHX Television in Canada has signed a coproduction deal with DreamWorks Animation (DWA) to bring more than 60 hours of original animated content to its channels.

The five-year agreement will see DWA and DHX Studios coproduce 130×30′ episodes of children’s programming for Family Channel, Family Jr, Family CHRGD and Télémagino in Canada.

The Halifax-headquartered company will handle distribution of the content in Canada while DWA will sell it in the rest of the world.

In addition, DHX is taking 1,300 half-hours of programming from DWA’s library, which will be broadcast from June next year on DHX’s channels.

Series coming to the networks include All Hail King Julien, The Mr Peabody & Sherman Show, Dragons: Race to the Edge and The Croods, all of which were originally produced by DWA for Netflix.

DHX has also licensed 300 half-hours of teen content exclusively in Canada from DWA-owned AwesomenessTV for Family Channel.

This builds on the deal it made with the online youth network earlier this year for almost 50 hours of existing and original programming.

The series included in the agreement will air on Family Channel’s evening teen block, F2N, which launches in January 2016, led by DHX’s Degrassi: Next Class.

DHX bought Family Channel, along with cable networks Disney XD and Disney Junior, last year and later rebranded them.
