DHX approved for Bell kids’ takeover

Canadian producer and distributor DHX Media has received final approval for its proposed C$170m (US$160m) acquisition of Canuck kids’ cable networks Family Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) granted permission for the takeover, which includes both the English- and French-language feeds for Disney Junior from former owner Bell Media.

The deal, revealed in November, is the first time DHX has moved into the channels business, aside from its YouTube presence.

The acquisition has now met key regulatory requirements for completion, having also received approval from the Competition Bureau in December 2013, and is expected to close on or around July 31. At that time, the company also expects to close its previously announced senior debt financing.

The CRTC has also approved DHX’s request to permit Family to source up to 40% of its Canadian programming schedule, exclusive of filler programming, from related companies.

In April, DHX continued its buying spree with the acquisition of Epitome, the Canuck production company behind the Degrassi
teen drama franchise, for C$33m (US$30m).
