Deutschland 83 ramps up sales

MIPCOM: A total of 20 broadcasters and subscription VoD services have picked up German thriller series Deutschland 83 from FremantleMedia International (FMI).

The eight-parter, from FMI-owned UFA Fiction, deals with the threat of nuclear conflict in the 1980s and follows a 24-year-old East German man who is sent to West Germany to gather intelligence on the placement of nuclear missiles.

The drama has now been placed with Channel One (Russia), Sky Italia (Italy), Hulu (US), SundanceTV (English-speaking Canada), Super Ecran (French-speaking Canada), RTÉ (Ireland), Stan (Australia and New Zealand), Telenet (Belgium), RTL Klub (Hungary), Hotvision (Israel), TV4 (pan-regional Scandinavia) and Kino Lorber (US for DVD and iTunes).

It was created by US novelist Anna Winger (This Must Be the Place) and producer Joerg Winger and commissioned by Germany’s RTL. The show debuted on SundanceTV in the US earlier this year.


The acquisitions follow on from deals with SundanceTV (US), Canal+ (France), Channel 4/Walter Presents (UK), SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and RUV (Iceland).
