Deutschland 83 enters Scandinavia

Broadcasters across Scandinavia have pre-bought Cold War drama Deutschland 83 from FremantleMedia International (FMI).

The eight-part series, from FremantleMedia-owned UFA Fiction (Generation War), has been picked up by SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and RUV (Iceland).

The thriller deals with the threat of nuclear conflict in the 1980s and follows a 24-year-old East German man who is sent to West Germany to gather intelligence on the placement of nuclear missiles.

The sales follow a previously announced deal with SundanceTV that will see the miniseries become the first German-language drama to air on a major US network.

Deutschland 83 was recently commissioned by Germany’s RTL TV – as revealed by C21 – with FMI distributing worldwide.

The show is exec produced by UFA Fiction’s Joerg Winger (co-creator alongside Anna Winger) and Nico Hofmann, and directed by Edward Berger and Samira Radsi.

Delegates at C21’s International Drama Summit in November last year got a sneak preview of the series with an introduction by FremantleMedia’s director of global drama, Sarah Doole. Early bird discount rates for this year’s event are currently available.
