CW Seed’s TV debut flops

US broadcast network The CW is axing two scripted comedies including the first series developed for TV by its fledgling digital studio CW Seed.

Backpackers (10×30′) was based on material previously released as digital episodes on CW Seed but has been pulled after just its second episode.

The show featured two best friends who race across Europe in search of a missing bride-to-be, while struggling with questions about what to do with their lives. It was produced by US prodco Shaftesbury and its digital arm, Smokebomb Entertainment, and had been developed for TV by Jay Bennett.

The CW launched its new digital studio and website in August to serve as an incubator for new talent and ideas.

Also on the chopping block is Canadian series Seed, from Force Four Entertainment, that followed the life of a bartender.

The shows will be replaced by repeats of drama series Arrow and America’s Next Top Model, which will support the popular comedy improvisation series Whose Line Is It Anyway. The CW recently ordered a 24 episode third season of that show, slated to start airing in 2015.
