Corus puts fingerprints on iPad market

Canadian media giant Corus Entertainment is the latest television company to enter the gaming market by investing in an interactive iOS mobile platform for kids.

Toronto-listed Corus has led a funding round for San Francisco’s Fingerprint Digital, which operates an entertainment and learning platform called Fingerprint Play that runs on the iPhone, iTouch and iPad.

Fingerprint has so far launched 14 apps, which it claims have been played for a combined 20 million minutes. With the Corus money secured, new apps are being prepared for Android devices.

Corus’s kids’ assets include animation unit Nelvana Enterprises, which has a stake in the KidsCo network; publishing firm Kids Can Press; TV networks such as Teletoon; and brands including Max & Ruby, Babar, Franklin and Friends and Scaredy Squirrel. It plans to launch some of its characters on Fingerprint Play.

“With our focus and commitment on providing audiences with access to great content on all platforms, Corus looks forward to helping Fingerprint grow and expand their technology worldwide,” said Nelvana MD Colin Bohm.

The move makes Corus the latest TV company to buy into the digital games space, following the likes of Saban Brands, which acquired The Playforge last month, Disney (Playdom) and Viacom International Media Networks (Social Express).
