Conan the Barbarian rides to Amazon

Amazon is developing a drama series based on Robert E Howard’s Conan the Barbarian character.

Ryan Condal is the creator and writer of the forthcoming show, which will be helmed by Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochink. It is being produced by Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content, with Warren Littlefield attached to executive produce.

The series will follow Conan as he is forced out of his tribe. Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler are attached to executive produce for Pathfinder alongside Condal, according to Deadline, which broke the story.

Conan the Barbarian has been adapted for screen in the past, with the most notable interpretation being the 1982 feature film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Condal co-created, executive produced and is the showrunner of USA series Colony, which is into its third season. He is also currently adapting sci-fi novel Logan’s Run for Warner Bros.

Conan the Barbarian was first published in Weird Tales in 1932 and also had a Marvel comics run in the 1970s.

The new TV show furthers Amazon’s shift towards sci-fi and fantasy drama, having recently bought the TV rights to the Lord of the Rings novels.
