CNBC reboots Deal or No Deal

Howie Mandel hosted NBC’s Deal or No Deal for four years

US business and entertainment network CNBC has greenlit a reboot of classic gameshow Deal or No Deal presented by the original host of the US version, Howie Mandel.

Endemol Shine North America-owned Truly Original will produce the series, which will join CNBC’s primetime line-up towards the end of 2018.

Mandel, who hosted the US version of the Dutch format on NBC for four years, will also exec produce the series, as will former showrunner Scott St. John. Truly Original co-presidents and CEOs Glenda Hersh and Steven Weinstock and CNBC’s Jim Ackerman and Christian Barcellos will also exec produce.

Based on an Endemol Shine format, Deal or No Deal features contestants vying for a top prize of US$1m. With 26 sealed briefcases full of varying amounts of cash, contestants are faced with a game of odds and chance and must whether to accept an offer of cash from the mysterious Banker in exchange for what might be contained in the contestant’s chosen briefcase.

“Our primetime programmes, with their focus on business and money, strive to be both entertaining and instructive,” said CNBC chairman Mark Hoffman. “Shows like The Profit and Shark Tank are built around high stakes and high rewards.”

The format’s reincarnation will bolster CNBC’s primetime line-up, which the network announced earlier this year. Deal or No Deal will join new original series such as BYOB: Be Your Own Boss, Staten Island Hustle and Deadly Rich, plus returning series American Greed, Secret Lives of the Super Rich and Jay Leno’s Garage.
