Clarkson in Top Gear punch apology

Jeremy Clarkson has apologised and paid compensation to the producer he punched last year – an incident that effectively forced the Top Gear presenter off the show.

The BBC chose not to extend Clarkson’s contract in March following the incident in which he punched producer Oisin Tymon in an argument over meal provision on location.

Tymon, who was left with a bloody lip, made a racial discrimination and injury claim against the BBC and Clarkson.

Clarkson and the UK pubcaster have now reportedly contributed to a settlement of more than £100,000 (US$140,000).

Clarkson said: “I would like to say sorry, once again, to Oisin Tymon for the incident and its regrettable aftermath. I want to reiterate that none of this was in any way his fault.

“I would also like to make it clear that the abuse he has suffered since the incident is unwarranted and I am sorry too that he has had to go through that.”

The BBC recently unveiled the new-look Top Gear, fronted by Chris Evans, to buyers at Showcase in Liverpool. Clarkson and former co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May have signed a lucrative deal with Amazon to produce a new motoring show for its streaming service.
