CityTV orders two scripted originals

Canadian broadcaster CityTV has greenlit a drama inspired by notorious underworld figure Vito Rizzuto and a millennial-focused, digital-first comedy.

Bad Blood: The Vito Rizzuto Story (6×60′) will debut on City and FX in the US in 2017 and was inspired by the life and death of reputed mobster Rizzuto.

New Metric Media, Sphere Media and DHX Media will produce the series, which is based on the book Business or Blood: Mafia Boss Vito Rizzuto’s Last War.

It will focus on the period after an incarcerated Rizzuto saw his empire dismantled and his closest friends and family members murdered.

Upon his release, a Shakespearean revenge tale plays out, leading to the brutal murders of his closest companions and, ultimately, the death of Rizzuto himself.

Second Jen (6×30′), meanwhile, is a coming-of-age comedy about two second-generation Chinese and Filipino-Canadian millennials and best friends experiencing all of life’s ‘firsts.’

Created by and starring Samantha Wan and Amanda Joy, the show will be produced by Don Ferguson Productions and premiere on Citytv.com in the fall, before airing on City and OMNI Television at a later date.

CityTV is part of Toronto-based Rogers Media, which this week commissioned a slate of original series for its joint-venture channel Viceland.
