Chellomedia buy-out completed

AMC Networks has completed its US$1bn takeover of cable giant Liberty Global’s Chellomedia content business.

The deal with Liberty, owned by media mogul John Malone, was announced last October and has now been finalised.

US-based AMC will take on a number of Chellomedia’s operating businesses, including Chello Central Europe, Chello Latin America, Chello Multicanal, Chello Zone, ad sales unit Atmedia and broadcast solutions unit Chello DMC.

AMC also gets its hands on Chellomedia’s stakes in joint ventures with CBS International, A+E Networks and Zon Optimus.

However, Liberty will retain its Dutch premium channels business which consists of Film1 and Sport1.

The move provides AMC with a chance to further extend the distribution of its original programming from AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE TV globally.

In November, Chello Zone shed almost 10% of its workforce, including its director of programming Adam Robinson, as part of a restructure.
