C4, PBS prep unseen Diana footage

Channel 4 in the UK and US pubcaster PBS are preparing a feature-length documentary on Diana, Princess of Wales to mark the 20th anniversary of her death.

UK indie Kaboom Film & TV is producing 110-minute doc Diana: In Her Own Words, which will show the Princess speaking openly in tapes captured by her speech coach, Peter Settelen.

The footage, captured at Kensington Palace in 1992 and 1993, will include material that has never previously been broadcast on UK television.

Viewers will see Diana rehearsing her speaking voice and talking informally about her personal life, including her upbringing and marriage.

Channel 4 deputy chief creative officer and head of factual Ralph Lee commissioned the doc, which will air on C4 in August.

PBS’s version of the film, overseen by VP of programming and development Bill Gardner, will air in the same month.

Lee said: “This film gives Diana a voice and places it front and centre at a time when the nation will be reflecting on her life and death. It is her account of events both private and public and is an important contribution to the historical record.”

Diana’s long-term friend Dr James Colthurst and her ballet teacher Anne Allan will feature in the documentary.
