Investment from the Copenhagen Film Fund (CFF) has secured production of hostage drama Embassy Down in the Danish capital.

Due to begin shooting this summer, the entire production will take place in Copenhagen after the CFF backed the series to the tune of €1.75m (US$1.86m).

Though the plot is set in the city, filming was not originally due to take place there, with other locations being considered due to the fact Denmark does not offer a tax rebate for television productions. The CFF, however, was determined to secure the production, raising its initial investment offer in order to land the deal.

The 8×60’ series sees the new US embassy in Copenhagen become a war zone when terrorists storm the building, taking a number of hostages.

Coproduced by Fabrik Entertainment, MTG Studios and distributor Red Arrow International for MTG’s SVoD platform Viaplay, the series is written by creator Anders Frithiof August. The producers are Tomas Radoor and René Ezra of Nordisk Film.

Thomas Gammeltoft, CEO of the CFF, described Embassy Down as a “dream project.”

He continued: “It builds on our brilliant storytelling in Denmark, making use of our talents both in front of and behind the camera, to help create a great series aimed for both domestic and international markets.

“Our initial proposed investment into the series turned out to not be sufficient to secure the total shooting of the series in Copenhagen, which is why, together with Nordisk Film and Studio FilmStationen, we made an extra investment to total €1.75m to secure the project.”

Red Arrow International MD Henrik Pabst added: “Denmark is an extraordinary creative and production hub, and given that Embassy Down is both set and shooting in Copenhagen, working with the Copenhagen Film Fund and partners is a great example of how this kind of funding can work to create a show that is as authentic as possible”.

The executive producers are Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate from Fabrik Entertainment, Mikkel Bondesen, and Red Arrow’s Amelie von Kienlin.

Embassy Down, which was first announced ^[1] at C21’s Content London event last year, will premiere on Viaplay in the Nordics in 2018.

The CFF has previously invested in shows including The Bridge, Wallander and The Team.
