CBS renews five freshman series

US network CBS is bringing back five of its freshman series for second seasons, including Bull and Kevin Can Wait, as part of a slew of renewals across its schedule.

Bull looks at the career of Dr Philip McGraw aka Dr Phil

Bull, produced by CBS Television Studios, is a drama based on the early career of Phil McGraw, better known as US talkshow host Dr Phil. It has been sold into 200 territories worldwide by distributor CBS Studios International and has now been greenlit for a second season.

Sitcom Kevin Can Wait, about a newly retired police officer struggling to deal with his new life at home, has also been renewed. Produced by CBS Television Studios, the show has previously been sold by Sony Pictures Television to Channel 4 in the UK among others.

Other new series that have done enough for a renewal include the reboot of 1980s actions series Macgyver, Matt LeBlanc-fronted comedy Man With A Plan and sitcom Superior Donuts.

The five renewals are among 18 shows granted new seasons by CBS this week, with others including The Big Bang Theory, Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, NCIS and Scorpion.
