CBS loads up Magnum on Mondays

UPFRONTS: US broadcast network CBS has completely revamped its Monday night primetime this fall, with two new comedies, a revamp of Magnum PI and the latest season of Bull all scheduled.

The Neighborhood, from CBS Television Studios, kicks things off at 20.00, following a Midwest family that moves to a street in LA where not everybody appreciates their extreme neighbourliness.

Happy Together follows at 20.30, starring Damon Wayans Jr and Amber Stevens West as a 30-something married couple who reconnect with their youth when a young pop star moves in with them. The show is also produced by CBS television Studios.

The reboot of 1980s classic Magnum PI airs at 21.00, leading into Bull, which moves to Monday at 22.00 for its third season. The latter is replaced at 21.00 on Tuesday by new crime drama FBI.

Other than that it’s more of the same from 2017, with dramedy God Friended Me from Warner Bros and CBS Television Studios the other big addition on Sundays at 20.00.

The network’s other new commissions – including dramas The Code, The Red Line and comedy Fam – will all premiere in mid-season.

CBS overtook NBC as the most watched network in the US last week, according to Nielsen, averaging 8.98 million viewers, ahead of 8.95 million. That was despite NBC having the rights to the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics.

Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, said: “When you have a primetime line-up that won the season while competing against the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics on another network, you look to keep your core schedule mostly intact while making strategic moves to help grow nights.”
