Under the Dome is in its third season

US broadcast network CBS will not renew Under the Dome, its ground-breaking adaptation of a Stephen King novel, beyond its current third season.

The show, produced by CBS Television Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, focuses on a small New England town that finds itself sealed off from the rest of the world by a large transparent dome.

It broke new ground for CBS when it launched in the summer of 2013 – firstly as a straight-to-series order of 13 episodes, bypassing the traditional pilot process; secondly as a big commission for the summer season, rather than the fall; and thirdly because it streamed just days after its linear TV debut on Amazon Prime.

It was also part of a trend away from the traditional procedural series for the network and its first ever episode became the highest-rated drama debut on CBS for 21 years.

The show is currently in its third run, but the Eye network has announced that the season finale on September 10 will be the last ever episode.
