Cartoon Network, BBC win kids’ Baftas

Cartoon Network and BBC Children’s came out on top at last night’s Bafta Children’s Awards in London, having also dominated in 2013.

The Turner-owned US cablenet beat UK contenders such as CBBC, CBeebies and Cyw to win in the channel of the year category, while its fantasy comedy toon Adventure Time was victorious in the international category for a second year running.

It was up against Nickelodeon’ SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins in the category.

Meanwhile, CBBC series Shaun the Sheep, Operation Ouch!, Junior Bake Off and Diddy Movies 2 won in the animation, factual, entertainment and comedy categories respectively.

In preschool, CBeebies toon Sarah & Duck, which is produced by Karrot Entertainment, and Old Jack’s Boat, produced in-house at CBeebies, won in the animation and live action categories.

Best interactive original went to CBBC Online’s web series Dixie, produced by London-based prodco Kindle Entertainment, which was also named independent production company of the year.

Finally, illustrator and puppet-maker Peter Firmin, creator of classic British animation properties Bagpuss and The Clangers, received the Special Award for his outstanding contribution to children’s media.
