Canuck duo bring Clara Callan to screen

Canadian production companies Ballinran Entertainment and White Pine Pictures are partnering on a limited drama series based on acclaimed novel Clara Callan.

Richard B Wright’s novel follows the turbulent lives of two devoted sisters during the Great Depression and won a string of literary awards when it was released in 2001.

Craig Thompson, president and executive producer at Stratford-based Ballinran, said:“Clara Callan is gem of a novel and its themes are more timely than ever given the renewed interest in telling stories with strong female characters.”

Ballinran licensed the rights from The Alpern Group with the intention of filming the series in south-west Ontario.

The novel was originally adapted as a screenplay by playwright and writer Richard Whelan, who is also one of the producers of the series.

Ballinran and White Pine are collaborating on a number of new documentary and dramatic projects as a follow-up to their partnership on the film The Truth is in the Stars, produced for Bell Media and Kew Media International, which licensed the film to Netflix internationally. The documentary stars William Shatner and features one of the last in-depth interviews with Stephen Hawking, who passed away earlier this year.

White Pine Pictures produced procedural drama The Border (38×60’), which ran for three seasons on CBC from 2008 to 2010, and police drama Cracked (21×6’), which also aired on the pubcaster for two seasons beginning in 2013.
