C5 greenlights poverty doc

Viacom-owned broadcaster Channel 5 has commissioned UK indie Spun Gold to make a documentary that investigates poverty through the eyes of children.

Poverty: Through a Child’s Eyes (1×90’) looks at how families cope with day-to-day life under challenging circumstances and financial hardship, told from the perspective of three children aged between eight and 11.

Using home video diaries, the youngsters chronicle some of their appalling experiences, such as being bullied for trawling through rubbish for necessities and having to go to a neighbour’s house to take a shower because they don’t have a functioning boiler.

The doc follows Spun Gold’s 12 Years Old and Caring For Mum: Through a Child’s Eyes (1×60’), which aired on C5 in the UK earlier this year.

Poverty: Through a Child’s Eyes was commissioned by Simon Raikes, commissioning editor for factual at C5. At Spun Gold, Daniela Neumann and Chris Kelly are exec producers while Nic Guttridge is series producer and director.
