Pearl Habour: The Accused looks at the role of Admiral Husband Kimmel

MIPCOM: Channel 4 in the UK and Bell Media’s The Movie Network in Canada are teaming up on a one-off documentary to mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

UK indie Arrow Media and Canada’s Handel Productions have been given the greenlight for the doc which will air in Canada as Pearl Habour: The Accused and in the UK as Pearl Harbour: The Truth.

Directed by Christopher Spencer (Race for the White House, Son of God), the documentary is a political thriller that is said to offer new insights into who was to blame for allowing the Japanese attack that brought the US into the Second World War.

Admiral Husband Kimmel, commander-in-chief of the Pacific fleet based at Pearl Harbour, was found guilty of dereliction of duty at the time and his career was destroyed, but this doc questions whether that was fair.

The doc, to be distributed globally by BBC Worldwide, has exclusive access to a forthcoming book on the subject titled A Matter of Honour by Pulitzer-nominated journalists Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan.

Alan Handel, executive producer for Handel Productions, said: “When I learned about the book, its authors and their approach I knew that this should be a television special tied to the 75th anniversary of the attack. The full story of Admiral Kimmel opens a new window on what really happened and our treatment of the material plays out like a historical thriller.”

Ashley Potterton, executive producer for Arrow Media, said: “This is such a fascinating project to work on and is by far the most authoritative account of Pearl Harbour ever to be made.”
