C4 marks UK first for BBC Studios

Channel 4 has become the first third-party UK broadcaster to order from BBC Studios, the BBC’s new commercial production arm.

BBC Studios’ Science Unit has been commissioned by C4 to produce Fatberg Autopsy (1×60′, working title), which will take an in-depth look at the increasing prevalence of the enormous sewer-clogging lumps made up of congealed fat and waste.

The one-hour show will provide exclusive access to a recently discovered fatberg from a London sewer.

Paul Overton, executive producer at BBC Studios, said the show “promises to be both shocking and fascinating and should be an unforgettable sight for viewers.”

Gilly Greenslade, commissioning editor at C4, added: “We’re delighted to have a first commission from the talented team at BBC Studios. We hope to present our inquisitive viewers with a unique and accessible exploration of an issue affecting Britain’s growing towns and cities.”

It’s the second third-party commission for BBC Studios this week after it unveiled a deal with Discovery Channel in the US on Tuesday. The Red List will follow wildlife conservationists around the world and is being produced by BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit.

BBC Studios is the commercial production division of the UK public broadcaster, creating programmes for both the BBC and third-party operators.

Its output for the BBC includes Strictly Come Dancing, Antiques Roadshow, EastEnders, Top Gear, Three Girls, Louis Theroux’s latest documentary series and Drugsland on BBC3.

Late last year, BBC Studios merged with the pubcaster’s commercial sales arm BBC Worldwide, bringing the UK pubcaster’s programme production, sales and distribution together under one roof.
