C4 invests in sixth indie

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has taken a minority stake in factual indie Renowned Films as it enters the next phase of its £20m (US$33m) investment in local production companies.

The deal – financial terms of which were not disclosed – is the broadcaster’s sixth investment as part of its ‘Growth Fund’ initiative launched at the beginning of 2014.

Renowned Films, co-founded by Duane Jones, Max Welch and Tim Withers in 2012, was responsible for London Live’s first major commission, F2 Kicks Off (16×30’), and Sky Premier League Football show, Winner’s Circle (11×30’).

The firm is currently developing series for BBC3, ITV, MTV and 4Music, as well as National Geographic and Discovery in the US.

C4 previously took minority stakes in drama production outfit Eleven Film and factual indies Arrow Media, Lightbox, True North and Popkorn.

Meanwhile, C4 has signed a development partnership with factual and arts indie Brassneck TV.

The firm behind History channel show Hillsborough Remembered was established by John Osborne, director and musician Don Letts and sports broadcaster Kelly Cates in 2008.

C4’s next Growth Fund investment will be announced later this year.
