Brown Bag is behind animated children’s series including Octonauts

Irish animation outfit Brown Bag Films is preparing to hire more than 70 staff following the opening of its new 30,000sq ft studio in Dublin.

The subsidiary of Toronto-based 9 Story Media Group will ramp up staff numbers from 184, working across its Irish, UK and LA offices, to more than 250 by 2018 to help expand its global reach.

The firm is known for producing animated children’s series including Octonauts, Doc McStuffins, Bing and Henry Hugglemonster and is producing the CGI adaptation of Richard Adams’ novel Watership Down for Netflix and BBC.

Brown Bag was founded in 1994 by Cathal Gaffney and Darragh O’Connell and was acquired by 9 Story last year, with Gaffney then appointed chief operating officer at the Canuck firm.

Gaffney, who is also MD at Brown Bag, said: “This is a very exciting time to be working in the kids’ content business and we are currently recruiting for talent to work with us on exciting shows like Watership Down and Doc McStuffins.”

Neil Court, exec chairman of 9 Story, added: “The investment in the new space demonstrates our unwavering commitment to growing our production capabilities in Ireland.”
