Breaking Bad, Sherlock scoop Emmys

AMC’s hit TV series Breaking Bad dominated the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards last night after scooping nearly all the drama prizes on offer.

The show took home five Emmys in total at the Los Angeles ceremony, including the coveted outstanding drama series award, repeating its triumph of last year.

It was a disappointing evening for US premium cablenet HBO’s Game of Thrones however, which didn’t convert any of its nominations. US streaming giant Netflix also went away empty-handed after both of its original series, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, were snubbed.

Meanwhile, Modern Family, about three couples and their children, won outstanding comedy series for the fifth consecutive year, equalling the record set by Frasier for the most comedy wins.

BBC1 drama Sherlock was also a big winner on the night, winning a hat-trick of awards. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman won best actor and best supporting actor in a mini-series, while Steven Moffat won best writing in a mini-series for the final episode of Sherlock’s third season.

FX won the best miniseries/movie category with 10-part crime drama Fargo while HBO telepic The Normal Heart won the Emmy for best television movie.

The ceremony also paid tribute to industry members who died in the past year and included a special homage to Robin Williams by long-time friend Billy Crystal.
