Boomerang swings into South Korea

Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) is preparing to launch its children’s channel Boomerang in South Korea this weekend.

Wacky Races is being revived

Boomerang will begin broadcasting in South Korea on November 14 on cable and IPTV platforms.

Last year TBS began relaunching the network around the world as an all-animation, youth-skewing companion channel to Cartoon Network, targeting 4-9s.

Warner Bros Animation (WBA) recently agreed a deal with Turner that will see it supply almost 450 half-hours of original programming, primarily mined from its huge library of classic titles, to Boomerang.

Among the properties getting a reboot is Wacky Races, as revealed by C21 earlier this month.

Other series due to air on Boomerang include The Tom and Jerry Show, Looney Tunes and Scooby-Doo, alongside acquisitions like Mr Bean and Inspector Gadget as well as local content.

In September, Turner Asia Pacific greenlit Beat Monsters (52×2′), a coproduction between Korean animation prodcos Synergy Media and Studio Goindol.

Phil Nelson, MD of North Asia at Turner International, said: “Turner has already made a firm commitment to the local animation industry over the years and this investment is set to continue.”
