Veteran television producers Remy Blumenfeld and Justin Bodle have launched a £3m (US$4.35m) incubator to enable content creators to launch their own indies.

Blumenfeld, who co-founded Brighter Pictures and launched the formats arm of ITV Studios earlier in his career, has joined forces with drama producer Bodle to launch The Hot House.

With backing from Bodle’s Purecom Entertainment International media investment group, The Hot House will initially give 10 creative teams the chance to launch their own labels from offices in west London.

The pair say the model differs from traditional backing for indies because the relationship will be based in creativity and not aligned with a super indie, broadcaster, private equity fund or distributor.

Former ITV Studios production manager Jo Juson has joined the fledgling outfit as head of production and work is already underway to identify senior executive producers who want to start their own production companies.

Blumenfeld described the move as a “call to arms” for development heads and exec producers who feel ready to launch their own content companies.

He added: “The idea came out of conversations with friends and former colleagues who love developing, pitching and producing shows but currently feel constrained.

undressed“The UK is a recognised centre of excellence for content creation, but there is little support out there for creative entrepreneurs. This is all about literally hot-housing talent for the first years until they are self-sustaining.”

Blumenfeld’s indie, Thinking Violets, will trade as part of the new group, with creative director Fernando de Jesus, who recently joined from ITV Studios, continuing to manage his own slate.

Purecom, meanwhile, is also planning to invest in a diverse range of media companies in addition to The Hot House, and act as an active management group.
