BET tells Mandela’s story

Viacom-owned BET Networks in the US has commissioned a six-part drama miniseries on the life of Nelson Mandela, starring Laurence Fishburne in the lead role.

Madiba is set in the 1960s when a young Mandela faces up to the political unrest in his homeland, based on two of his books – Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela By Himself.

The former South African president’s grandson Kweku Mandela is exec producing.

Canada’s Blue Ice Pictures, UK-based Left Bank Pictures and South Africa’s Out of Africa Entertainment are the prodcos along with Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy Productions. Production will start in early 2016.

Kevin Hooks (Prison Break) is attached as director.
