BBCWW in Chinese telco first

Blue Planet II premiered at the end of last year

BBC SHOWCASE: BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) has agreed its first content partnership with a Chinese telco, selling a package of shows including Blue Planet and Planet Earth to Migu Video.

Migu Video was set up in 2014 as a wholly owned subsidiary of China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless network operator. BBCWW will provide the platform with programmes available as AVoD and SVoD online, via mobile and on IPTV.

The deal includes more than 2,200 hours of BBC factual, lifestyle and preschool programming that will be made available to more than 856 million China Mobile subscribers as part of the agreement from March 31.

The content partnership was announced by Kelvin Yau, general manager of Greater China at BBCWW, and Migu CEO Wang Bin.

Other programming heading to Migu as part of the deal includes Hey Duggee, Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby, Steve Jobs: Billion Dollar Hippy, The Truth About Exercise, Simon Reeve in Russia and From the Sky Down, a documentary about rock band U2. The shows will either be subtitled or dubbed into Mandarin.
