Coconut comes from comedian Humza Arshad (front(

BBC3 is preparing a comedy show from a YouTube star who is set to become the first British Muslim to have his own scripted series on the online service.

Coconut is the first scripted comedy series to come from UK prodco Big Deal Films and features comedian Humza Arshad, who is known for his YouTube channel Humza Productions and online series Diary of a Badman.

Arshad stars as a tweed-wearing, hard Brexit-supporting ‘gentleman documentarian’ and star host of Pak Nation TV, who wants to become an authority on UK life and culture.

The show is being directed by Mustapha Kseibati (CBBC’s Apple Tree House) and is executive produced by Big Deal’s MD Dhanny Joshi and Thomas Stogdon.

Joshi told C21 the show, which is available on online-only BBC3 from today, is a “big win for TV diversity” with Humza the first British Muslim to have his own scripted series on the channel and the first on the BBC as a whole since Adil Ray, who is behind Citizen Khan.

The prodco, which has previously been behind Disabled Fight Club (6×3′) for Channel4’s online service All4 as well as The Bants for ITV2, is part of the IndieLab accelerator programme.
