BBC2 makes space for astronauts

The BBC has ordered four science shows for its BBC2 and BBC4 channels, including a programme that will test the attributes of aspiring astronauts.

The Toughest Job in the Universe (working title) will air on BBC2 and sees 12 men and women put through a series of tests normally reserved for real-life astronaut candidates.

The 6×60′ show is being produced by BBC Studios, with commercial arm BBC Worldwide securing global distribution rights to the programme and format.

BBC2 will also air Secrets of the Dinosaur Crater (1×60′), which is made by Barcroft Productions and investigates the sudden disappearance of the dinosaurs.

Barcroft, which has been ramping up its digital and TV production business since receiving investment from Channel 4 earlier this year, has gained access to a major scientific expedition that is drilling into a meteorite crater off the coast of Mexico.

Meanwhile, Sound Waves (2×60′), which explores the science behind sounds, will air on BBC4 along with Stargazing Live (3×60′), which is returning for its seventh season and will take viewers to Australia. Both shows are from BBC Studios.

In related news, BBC 2 has ordered a third season of Scottish comedy Two Doors Down. The show, produced in-house, follows residents as they navigate the trials and tribulations of suburban life.
